ASORCAFÉ

Smallholders Lot

One can only imagine what went through the minds of the first group of ASORCAFE farmers when they landed in Asia more than 12 years ago. The thoughts of their lush coffee farms fresh on their minds must have contrasted dramatically with the new sights, smells, and sounds.

In their suitcases, they packed samples of green bean coffee with the same hands that grew and processed them. The producers had set out on their own, determined to show the coffee world who they are.

And so they flew into the vast universe of specialty coffee motivated by the notion that they could be paid more fairly for the high quality of their coffee. Unbeknownst to them, they would later attract buyers from all over the world to their remote mountain town, and in the process, sway illicit crop production with the one their ancestors taught them to nurture and protect.

The story of the ASORCAFÉ producers' association is one defined by faith, tradition, and fearlessness. It is telling of the tenacious character of the farmers in Inzá, and evidence that specialty coffee is a powerful vehicle to promote change.
